Property Description

Welcome to Sponsel! And, welcome to an amazing mountain-top experience. Perched on a dramatically-situated lot on the face of Ram’s Horn Mountain in prestigious Windcliff Estates, everything about Sponsel proclaims that this is “one in a million” --- from the cocky tilt of its roof lines and its massive scale to the sloping wall of glass that is its façade. Just inside the leaded-glass front door is a plate-glass-walled vestibule that buffers the quiet interior from the out-of-doors, but immediately fixes one’s gaze on the wonders awaiting your pleasure just beyond. The living room at Sponsel is on a par with the lobby of a luxury hotel. In fact, to ever measure up to Sponsel, the luxury hotel would also have to have a magnificent, face-on view of Rocky Mountain National Park. Sponsel certainly does! And, this stunning Colorado spectacle is viewed through over a thousand square feet of glass that make the living room at Sponsel an architectural marvel! Its floors are rare woods laid in the rich manner of parquetry. A three-story wall of marble cradles a wood burning fireplace ringed by leather seating. A board-room-sized table topped with plate glass invites some serious hours of gaming. Did I mention the wet bar? The artful décor offers an occasional reminder that your host family, the Sponsels, are from TEXAS! But, when the fresh Colorado air is calling, there is direct access to the massive, wrap-around deck outside where lounging, char broiling, and dining are viable options.

The kitchen at Sponsel is a chef’s grandest dream come true. Surely the magnificent view of the Front Range (mountains --- not the stove!) ascending to the Heavens in Rocky Mountain National Park will inspire creative culinary endeavors. Stacked ovens, a warming drawer, a prep island worthy of an ocean, dramatic tube lighting, and every essential vessel and tool are readily at hand. (Near the kitchen is a laundry suite you simply won’t want to leave behind!) Sponsel’s formal dining room is accessed through massive plate glass doors. Set the waiting table with china and stemware beneath the tray ceiling and welcome the magnificent view pouring in through the west windows as a cherished guest at every meal.

There are optional ways to venture upstairs in search of the formal sleeping suites. The curving staircase is lined with marble. But, if need or choice dictate, an elevator strategically poised just off the entry hall can whisk you there as well. A pair of sublimely-elegant suites awaits. The master of masters features a mirrored wall reflecting the mighty king bed and the flickering fireplace. The lady’s dressing room and attendant closet space are big enough to justify a map. The vanity is embraced by three walls of glass. The marble bathroom offers a Jacuzzi soaking tub with majestic mountain views and a shower room with a dressing area. The suite boasts over 100 square feet of private deck. The ensuite queen bedroom facing the slopes of Ram’s Horn Mountain has a two-story ceiling dressed in wood, a glass wall with a view to the living lobby below, a bar, office, and library. Tall trees sway to the rhythms of the breeze just outside.

Take the elevator this time and it’s two stories down to the great family room with its wall of windows and mountains strutting in review, an enormous fireplace facing a sunken conversation pit of cozy seating, a wet bar, large-screen TV, gaming table, a full-sized pool table, and a hot tub. Nearby is a sauna suite complete with a dressing room, shower, and bathroom. An ensuite queen bedroom and an ensuite twin round out the sleeping configurations at Sponsel. The family room and the two bedrooms each have exterior doorways to over 700 square feet of outdoor patios and the views that they embrace.

Suffice to say, Sponsel is a jewel of a mountain masterpiece! And, the reviews tendered by visitors to Sponsel certainly underscore that assessment:
• “Absolutely gorgeous!”
• “The views are definitely amazing!”
• “We have been coming to Estes Park for 30 years, and staying at the Sponsel home was our best decision yet!”
• “The joys of our journey were amplified by the awe we shared by being in this house and in this place.”
• “Our grandsons have often asked about ‘the gorgeous house of windows high up on the mountainside.’ As luck would have it, this time around we were able to spend nine days here. Wunderbar!”
• “…..the feeling that you’re almost within reach of the stars at night!”
• “Amazing home. We have stayed here three times and intend to make it a lifelong tradition!”
• “Sponsel is an amazing architectural statement!”

Although Estes Park [Rocky Mountain National Park’s gateway community] is only 15 minutes distant by car, you will always feel securely tucked away at “Sponsel” --- separated from the “hustle and bustle” of people and their traffic. The Windcliff enclave embracing the “Sponsel” residence is a private residential community comprising 260 acres on the sunny western slopes of Ram’s Horn Mountain. It is served by a single entrance to private roads with no through streets or heavy traffic. It is truly a world apart!

Stunning view!

A FlipKey verified reviewer stayed 14 nights on 2/6/2016

We make yearly trips to this home and have never been dissatisfied. The house and view are amazing. If you're a star-gazer this home located at 9,500 feet above sea level will give you a breathtaking view of the heavens. If you want peace and quiet this home also delivers. We visit in February so the wind howls but that's the only noise you'll hear. It is a great get-away place! Wi-fi seems slow, but with a hot tub, sauna, pool table and plenty of coziness, you won't miss the internet that much!

Perfect home with the Perfect View!

A FlipKey verified reviewer stayed 7 nights on 8/30/2015

We enjoyed a wonderful week with our family - coming from Panama City, FL, Charlotte, NC, and Seattle, WA. Sponsel was the perfect place and so very comfortable. We were there the first week in Sept. 2015 and the weather was beautiful - nice and cool in the mornings and warm afternoons. We used the fans on a few days in the afternoons and they worked well to keep it comfortable. The bedrooms are private and quiet and the great rooms, decks, and other amenities all enjoyable. 5 Stars!

Amazing stay

Amazing house. We have stayed here three times and are starting to make it a tradition. It's fantastic to get a large group together and have plenty of room for everyone. The windcliff staff are great as well, extremely friendly and helpful.

Very nice - but beware of the sun!

A FlipKey verified reviewer stayed 6 nights on 9/26/2014

Fantastic property! Amazingly beautiful house, location, etc.. Windcliff is tops. Just one word of caution - Sponsel has floor-to-ceiling windows over three floors, which, in the summer or when unusually warm, translates to a greenhouse effect. When we checked in (late September) the temperature inside was just about 90 degrees, and it took quite some time and a drastic weather change before it cooled down. When it is in the 50s or colder outside, the glass/greenhouse effect is wonderful. When the place heats up to 85 degrees or hotter - not so great.

Large home, lots of amenities, high on the hill

A TripAdvisor Member stayed 8 nights on 6/29/2014

This large home was wonderful for our children and their families. We had plenty of beds for 11 of us. We had two small children who did well although the deck was off limits for the 1 year old, and the surrounding land was steep so no outdoor play. There was both a highchair and pac-n-play provided. It was quite clean, kitchen was equipped well, and had a beautiful view looking west to the Divide. We were near the YMCA camp and the RMNP and a short drive to Estes proper. We enjoyed eating most of our meals in the home and hanging in the family areas. There is a hot tub which was nice but the head rests need replaced due to oxidation. The outdoor grill was nice but wouldn't heat adequately. We contacted the Windcliff office and someone was sent up and apparently tried to repair while we were absent, but we didn't notice a difference. Just wouldn't heat adequately. We also notified Windcliff regarding the freezer portion of Subzero frig also not being cold enough despite adjustments to keep ice cream frozen. Made ice but quite slow. Being the July 4 weekend, not surprised that they weren't completely repaired but it would have been nice. Also, the back patio area on the lower level was in the midst of renovation so we didn't use the area and the construction related dumpster blocked some access to the driveway parking. Overall, still a very nice home, pretty upscale but just needs some improvements. The view was worth all of it!

Manager Response

Thanks for your review. We would like everyone to know that our occupancy limit is 8 persons due to zoning. We made an exception since this guest had small children with them. We apologize that a new roof was being installed on Sponsel that overlapped your stay, accounting for the dumpster and back patio area. The new roof is scheduled for completion by the end of July and is not worked on while we have guests. The grill problem has been fixed, we appreciate your noticing this. The refrigerator was also serviced soon after you left and works fine now. We regret that in our mountain location we sometime cannot schedule appliance contractors for next-day service. We hope you visit Windcliff again soon!
